The Belvedere Writers' Club Short Story Competition 2006/7

Short Stories for Young Adults

Please note: revised deadline of July 2007

Following the success of the Belvedere Writers’ Club’s last short story competition, we’ve decided to do it all again, but bigger, better, faster, harder, and with a more timely title.

The new BWC Short Story Competition is like its predecessor in many ways but this time we’re looking for new stories suitable for those aged 12 years and up, and we stress the up part of that request, since what we’re really looking for is great fiction that can inspire the young and old alike – (think ‘Huckleberry Finn’, ‘Of Mice and Men’, ‘Lord of the Flies’, ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’, ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, get the picture?).

A selection of the best stories we receive will be compiled into a new volume of short fiction and once more we promise that it will be a beautiful volume, that it will take pride of place on your bookshelf, and that it will be a great read.

PRIZES:

1st prize: £100, publication, and a special edition copy of the published book.

2nd and 3rd prizes: £25, publication and special edition copies of the published book.

10 Runners up prizes: of publication and standard editions of the published book.

(Special Edition copies of the book will contain all the text of the standard versions but will be presented in a slightly different and more exciting manner. Suggestions so far include a luxury, hand-bound & hard-back edition, an edition that takes the form of a huge wall-poster and an edition that contains a fold-out origami dinosaur. None, one, or all of these suggestions may be used in the end - we only guarantee that we’ll attempt something different and exciting.)

The cost of entry, by either method is five pounds. Cheques should be made payable to Decode Arts & Media Ltd. Submissions should be received on or before the 30 July 2007 and should adhere to the following rules:

Entries should be accompanied by a contact sheet including the author’s full name, the title of the story, full postal address, telephone number, email address and the word length of the submission.
The stories must be no more than 5000 words in length. There is no minimum word length.
Entries should be typewritten or word-processed and double-spaced.
Entries submitted without an S.A.E will not be returned. Writers submit manuscripts at their own risk.
The judges are hard asses - their decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into unless it is extremely neatly hand-written and sent from somewhere exotic - the judges like to get letters from exotic places as they don't get out much these days.

The BWC reserve the right to change any aspect of the rules at any time - including the rule about being able to change the rules - though we're unlikely to do so without very good reason.

Please feel free to contact us if you require any more information
